इस साल बाज़ार में जितने जामुन दिखाई दे रहे हैं, उतने मैंने पिछले दो दशकों में कभी नहीं देखे। ​जामुन के अक्षरशः ढेर लग रहे हैं (नीचे गिर रहे हैं)। जिन पेड़ों पर पिछले साल इक्का-दुक्का फल आए थे, वे पेड़ भी इस बार जामुन से पटे पड़े हैं। जहाँ फल आए थे, वहाँ अब उन का अंबार लगना शुरू हो गया है। ​आखिर यह सब क्या चल रहा है? ​हमारी दादी/नानी हमेशा कहती थीं कि, "जिस गर्मियों में जामुन के ऐसे ढेर लगते हैं, उस साल सूखा पड़ता है।" ​बुजुर्गों का यह पारंपरिक ज्ञान वनस्पति विज्ञान (Botany) के वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोण से बिल्कुल सही और सटीक है। विज्ञान में इस दिलचस्प और उतनी ही चौंकाने वाली प्रक्रिया को "मास्टिंग" (Masting) या "स्ट्रेस फ्रूटिंग" (Stress Fruiting) कहा जाता है। ​पेड़ों द्वारा खुद को खत्म करके ज्यादा से ज्यादा फल देने के इस आखिरी प्रयास को कभी-कभी "सुसाइड फ्रूटिंग" (Suicide Fruiting) या "बंपर क्रॉप" भी कहा जाता है। ​यह असल में क्या है और इसके पीछे का विज्ञान क्या कहता है, आइए इसे आसान भाषा में समझते हैं: ​१.
